Heat pump tripping a breaker in New Zealand
If a heat pump trips a breaker or RCD when it starts, leave it off and do not keep resetting the protective device. Record exactly when the trip occurs, which switch moved, what else lost power and whether there was heat, a burning smell, sparking, water or unusual noise, then arrange qualified fault finding.
Stop repeated resets and check for immediate danger
A protective device has operated for a reason, even though the cause is not visible from the front of the switchboard. Repeatedly turning the heat pump and breaker back on can reproduce a fault and add heat at a damaged connection. Tenants and owners should not remove covers, touch wiring or bypass the device.
Move away and call 111 if there is an electrical fire, smoke, serious electric shock or immediate danger. Where there is no active emergency but the unit or isolator is hot, scorched, sparking, fizzing or smells burnt, stop using it and keep people away until it is assessed.
Record when the trip occurs
Note whether the protection trips as soon as the unit is switched on, after the fan starts, when heating or cooling begins, or only after it has run for a period. Record the selected mode and temperature, recent maintenance, and whether the problem happens every time or only intermittently. This timing helps narrow the test plan without asking anyone to recreate the fault.
Identify the exact breaker or RCD from a safe position and list the other rooms or appliances that lost power. A label such as heat pump may be helpful, but circuit labels can be incomplete or out of date. Take only a closed-cover switchboard photograph and do not put a hand inside the board.
Include weather, water and recent changes
Tell the electrician if the trip followed heavy rain, exterior cleaning, a roof or plumbing leak, condensation around equipment, or work near the indoor or outdoor unit. Do not approach standing water or open an isolator to look for moisture. A photograph taken from a dry, safe position is enough for the work order.
Also record whether another appliance, renovation load or switchboard change was added before the tripping began. That sequence does not prove the new work caused the fault, but it helps the electrician understand the circuit history and decide what to test.
Test both the equipment and its electrical supply
Possible fault areas include the heat pump equipment, its local isolator, cable and connections, the circuit protection, moisture exposure or another load on a shared circuit. These are categories to test, not a diagnosis that can be made from the symptom alone. The same tripping pattern can have different causes at different properties.
An electrical worker can assess the fixed wiring, protection and electrical condition of the connected equipment. A refrigeration or heat pump technician may also be required where the fault is within components outside the electrician's scope. Ask the contractors to state what they tested and who is responsible for the next action.
Send a complete fault report
For a rental, the property manager should provide the full address, exact unit location, tenant contact, lawful access arrangement, owner approval and previous work on the same equipment or circuit. The tenant should describe observations only and should not be asked to diagnose the wiring or repeatedly test the unit.
