Can an old heat pump circuit be reused in New Zealand?
An existing heat pump circuit can sometimes be reused, but the old unit being connected there is not proof that the circuit suits its replacement. The new model's electrical input and manufacturer instructions must be compared with the cable, circuit capacity, protection, isolator and switchboard condition before the connection is decided.
Start with the replacement model
Record the exact indoor and outdoor model numbers from the quote or equipment label. Heating output alone does not state what the electrical circuit must provide. The electrician needs the manufacturer's voltage, maximum input, current, protective-device and wiring information for the proposed combination.
The quoted model should be checked against the existing breaker and cable before either is carried into the replacement scope. Similar heating capacity can still come with different starting, control or protection requirements. If the final model changes, the electrical decision should be checked again before installation.
Test the existing circuit and cable
EECA's New Zealand good-practice guide says a heat pump may use an existing circuit only where that circuit has sufficient spare capacity. Otherwise a separate circuit wired back to the main switchboard may be required. For example, a circuit that also supplies a power point can stay only if its other load and remaining capacity suit the new unit.
A site check should identify the cable route and size where accessible, the circuit's other connected loads, termination condition and relevant test results. Damage, heat, moisture, poor connections or an uncertain circuit route needs investigation. A closed-cover switchboard photograph is useful for planning, but it cannot replace these checks.
Check protection and the outdoor isolator
The circuit protection must suit the new equipment, cable and current wiring rules. An electrician should confirm the protective device, earthing and any required residual-current protection as one system. A breaker that did not trip with the old unit does not by itself show that the arrangement is suitable for the replacement.
EECA also calls for an accessible, lockable isolating switch for the outdoor unit and says it should be attached to the house rather than the removable unit. Existing isolators should be checked for rating, condition, location, weather exposure and labelling. A cracked, loose, scorched or water-affected enclosure should not simply be reused.
Assess the switchboard without assuming replacement
The switchboard check should cover available circuit capacity, the proposed protective device, enclosure condition, circuit identification and signs of heat or repeated tripping. The age of the board is relevant context, but age alone does not decide the scope. Some jobs need only a suitable circuit connection, while others reveal work that must be completed before the new load is added.
If the old heat pump has been tripping, smelling burnt or causing unusual heat, stop using it and include that history in the work request. Smoke, flame or a serious electric shock is an emergency, so move away and call 111. Do not repeatedly reset protection to keep the unit running until the replacement date.
Close the job with the applicable records
Fixed wiring belongs with a licensed electrical worker. Ask what documentation applies to the actual work, because a like-for-like maintenance job and a new or altered circuit do not always produce the same paperwork. Keep the model details, quote, work description, invoice and any applicable Certificate of Compliance, Electrical Safety Certificate or inspection record together.
